Type-Based Derivational Morphology
نویسنده
چکیده
Approaches to morphology typically account for regular, completely productive aaxation, while ignoring subregular and semiproductive schemata. The alternative approach to derivational morphology presented here relates exceptions and subregularities to productive rules. It accounts for the contribution lexicalized words make to the rule, and for the fact that not all new formations follow thèrules'. It also captures linguistically relevant generalizations that cannot be expressed in other theories. The approach is formalized in terms of complex recursive schemata structured in a multiple inheritance hierarchy, without positing lexical rules or lexical entries for aaxes. These schemata structure the existing lexicon, reducing redundancy, and at the same time serve as the basis for productive word formation. The approach handles zero-derivation and other nonconcatenative morphology straightforwardly.

Rule-based versus associative processes in derivational morphology.
The present article examines whether derivational morphology shows evidence of an associative memory structure. A distributional analysis of stems of attested derivational forms revealed evidence of clustering around phonological properties (gangs) for all nonneutral affixes but only a few neutral affixes. Subjects' acceptability ratings for novel complex words revealed sensitivity to the gang ...
متن کاملDErivBase: Inducing and Evaluating a Derivational Morphology Resource for German
Derivational models are still an underresearched area in computational morphology. Even for German, a rather resourcerich language, there is a lack of largecoverage derivational knowledge. This paper describes a rule-based framework for inducing derivational families (i.e., clusters of lemmas in derivational relationships) and its application to create a highcoverage German resource, DERIVBASE,...
متن کاملThe Form and Content of Derivational Relations
Morpheme based theories of word structure encourage us to think of derived words (e.g. \innatable") as built by adding one complex of phonological, syntactic and semantic content (/{bl j /, Adjective, `able to be verbed') to another (/innejt/, Verb | +NP]], `inflate'). This model lacks generality in a number of ways, however. (a) Derivational relationships may not involve the simple addition of...
متن کاملDerivBase.hr: A High-Coverage Derivational Morphology Resource for Croatian
Knowledge about derivational morphology has been proven useful for a number of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. We describe the construction and evaluation of DERIVBASE.HR, a large-coverage morphological resource for Croatian. DERIVBASE.HR groups 100k lemmas from web corpus hrWaC into 56k clusters of derivationally related lemmas, so-called derivational families. We focus on suffixal de...
متن کاملMorphonette: a morphological network of French
This paper describes in details the first version of Morphonette, a new French morphological resource and a new radically lexeme-based method of morphological analysis. This research is grounded in a paradigmatic conception of derivational morphology where the morphological structure is a structure of the entire lexicon and not one of the individual words it contains. The discovery of this stru...
